ADVANCED CARDIOVASCULAR LIFE SUPPORT


Part I - ACLS Provider Course (2 Day Course) Entry Requirements

  1. Current registration as a Medical or Dental Practitioner, Intern, Junior Intern, Professional Nurse or Paramedic
  2. Valid Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Certificate or valid Paediatric Advanced Life Support Certificate.
  3. Successful completion of the entry test

(A comprehensive 315-page ACLS Provider Manual and 105-page Handbook of Emergency Cardiovascular Care is supplied prior to Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Provider Course participation)

Course Outline

The knowledge and skills obtained on the Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Provider Course include:

Advanced Airway Management
  • Non-invasive airway techniques and devices
  • Invasive airway techniques and devices
  • Tracheal intubation and adjuncts

The Major ACLS Emergency Conditions
  • Respiratory arrest
  • Ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia
  • Pulseless electrical activity and asystole
  • Bradycardias and tachycardias
  • Acute mvocardial infarction

Electrical Therapy
  • Defibrillation with automated and manual defibrillators
  • Synchronized cardioversion
  • Transcutaneous pacing

Invasive Therapeutic and Monitoring Techniques
  • Peripheral IV access
  • Pericardiocentesis
  • Needle thoracostomy
  • The use of emergency medications

Special Resuscitation Situations
  • Stroke
  • Cardiac arrest associated with trauma
  • Ethical aspects of advanced life support


SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION
  1. Each candidate will receive an American Heart Association ACLS Card upon successful completion of the Course
  2. Accredited by the Health Professions Council of S.A. for 45 Continuing Professional Development points (including 2 points for medical ethics)
  3. Credit points towards selected College of Medicine examinations (e.g. Diploma in Primary Emergency Care)

PAEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT


PALS Provider Course (2 Day Course)

Entry Requirements
  1. Current registration as a Medical or Dental Practitioner, Intern, Junior Intern, Professional Nurse or Paramedic
  2. Valid Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider Certificate or valid Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Certificate.
  3. Successful completion of the entry test

(A comprehensive 450-page PALS Provider Manual is supplied prior to Paediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Course participation) Course Outline The knowledge and skills obtained on the Paediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Course include:

  • The paediatric chain of survival
  • Recognition and management of respiratory failure
  • Recognition and management of shock
  • Prevention of cardio-pulmonary arrest in children
  • Advanced paediatric airway management
  • Rapid sequence intubation techniques
  • Specialized vascular access techniques
  • Paediatric fluid therapy and medications
  • Rhythm disturbances and their management
  • Paediatric trauma and spinal immobilization
  • Paediatric and neonatal resuscitation
  • Analgesia and sedation techniques
  • Toxicology and toxidromes
  • Post-arrest stabilization and transport
  • Coping with death and dying
  • Children with special healthcare needs
  • Ethical and legal aspects of paediatric resuscitation
  • Multiple role-play scenarios and case discussions

  1. Each candidate will receive an American Heart Association PALS Provider Card upon successful completion of the Course
  2. Accredited by the Health Professions Council of S.A. for 42 Continuing Professional Development points (including medical ethics)
  3. Credit points towards selected College of Medicine examinations (e.g. Diploma in Primary Emergency Care)

Part II - ACLS for Experienced Providers Course (2 Day Course)

Entry Requirements
  1. Current registration as a Medical Practitioner, Intern, Professional Nurse or Paramedic
  2. Valid ACLS Provider Certificate issued within the previous 2 years.
  3. Successful completion of the entry test

(A comprehensive 502-page ACLS Principles & Practice Textbook and 200-page ACLS for Experienced Providers Textbook is supplied prior to Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support for Experienced Providers Course participation) Course Outline The knowledge and skills obtained on the Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support for Experienced Providers Course include:

  • Emergency Cardiovascular Care Pharmacology
  • 5 Quadrads Approach for Experienced Providers

  • Advanced Acute Coronary Syndromes
  • Life-threatening Electrolyte and Acid-Base Abnormalities
  • Toxicology in Emergency Cardiovascular Care.
  • Hypothermia and Submersion

ADVANCED NEONATAL LIFE SUPPORT


(Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
1 Day Course for Healthcare Professionals

In association with the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, the new Neonatal Resuscitation Program includes the latest techniques and protocols for advanced neonatal life support. The new 268 page Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation provides a complete self-study programme, including case scenarios for each major resuscitation technique, a Medication Performance Checklist and other checklists, megacodes, review modules, colour photo sections, special circumstances, ethics and complications of resuscitation. Included with the Textbook is a new interactive, multimedia CD-ROM which includes video footage of actual resuscitations, laryngoscopic camera footage, interactive scenarios plus animated 3-D demonstrations.

  1. Successful completion of the written and practical evaluations.
  2. Accredited by the Health Professions Council of S.A. for 25 Continuing Professional Development Points. (including ethics)
