Basic Life Support & First Aid Courses




  1. FAMILY & FRIENDS CPR(3 hour Course)

    The Family and Friends CPR Course is aimed at members of the public, family members, relatives and friends of adults and children at risk for sudden death. It is ideal for laypersons with no prior medical knowledge who want to learn life saving rescue skills for their loved ones.

    The Course provides a basic orientation to the skills of CPR and choking for adults, children and infants, and how to activate the emergency services. A 40-page Family and Friends CPR Booklet is provided to each participant for review before, during and after the Course. Two credit card-size Reminder Cards are included with the booklet, displaying the simple steps for adult, child and infant CPR, and providing information on the recognition of heart attack and stroke.

  2. FAMILY AND FRIENDS FIRST AID FOR CHILDREN(1 hour Course)

    The Family and Friends First Aid for Children Course is aimed at members of the public, family members, relatives and friends with no prior medical knowledge who would like to receive a basic orientation to first aid for their children.

    The Course provides information on child safety, basic first aid, medical emergencies, injury, and environmental emergencies. A 44-page Family and Friends First Aid for Children Booklet is provided to each participant for review before, during and after the Course.

  3. HEARTSAVER CPR(3 - 4 hour Course)

    The Heartsaver CPR Course is designed to teach the techniques of CPR and choking in adults, children and infants to all lay rescuers, particularly those who are expected to respond to emergencies in their occupation or workplace. The Course is ideal for security personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, lifeguards, swimming coaches, health and fitness staff, corporate and retail employees and other lay responders.

    The Course provides hands-on practice in the skills of CPR and choking for adults, children and infants, including the use of barrier devices and pocket masks, and how to activate the emergency services. A 48-page Heartsaver CPR Student Workbook and CD-ROM is provided to each participant for review before, during and after the Course. Two credit card-size Reminder Cards are included with the Workbook, displaying the simple steps for adult, child and infant CPR, and providing information on the recognition of heart attack and stroke.

    The accompanying CD-ROM contains a child and infant safety checklist, relevant anatomy and physiology, legal and ethical issues regarding CPR, frequently asked questions, heart attack and stroke. The CD-ROM also includes video clip demonstrations of adult, child and infant CPR and choking.

  4. HEARTSAVER CPR IN SCHOOLS(4 - 5 hour Course)

    The Heartsaver CPR in Schools Course is designed to teach the techniques of CPR and choking in adults, children and infants to all high school students. It is divided into seven 40-minute sessions so that the Course can easily be integrated into school periods.

    The Course provides hands-on practice in the skills of CPR and choking for adults, children and infants, including barrier devices, pocket masks, the use of Automated External Defibrillators, and how to activate the emergency services. A 54-page Heartsaver CPR in Schools Student Workbook and CD-ROM is provided to each participant for review before, during and after the Course. Two credit card-size Reminder Cards are included with the Workbook, displaying the simple steps for adult, child and infant CPR and AED use, and providing information on the recognition of heart attack and stroke.

    The accompanying CD-ROM contains a child and infant safety checklist, relevant anatomy and physiology, legal and ethical issues regarding CPR and AED use, frequently asked questions, heart attack and stroke, and taking care of an AED. The CD-ROM also includes video clip demonstrations of adult, child and infant CPR and choking and AED use.

  5. HEARTSAVER AED(4 - 5 hour Course)

    The Heartsaver AED Course is designed to teach the techniques of CPR and choking in adults, children and infants and the use of Automated External Defibrillators to all lay rescuers, particularly those who are expected to respond to emergencies in their occupation or workplace. The Course is ideal for security personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, lifeguards, swimming coaches, health and fitness staff, corporate and retail employees and other lay responders who might be exposed to, or have access to, an Automated External Defibrillator.

    The Course provides hands-on practice in the skills of CPR and choking for adults, children and infants, including barrier devices, pocket masks, the use of Automated External Defibrillators, and how to activate the emergency services. A 56-page Heartsaver AED Student Workbook and CD-ROM is provided to each participant for review before, during and after the Course. Two credit card-size Reminder Cards are included with the Workbook, displaying the simple steps for adult, child and infant CPR and AED use, and providing information on the recognition of heart attack and stroke.

    The accompanying CD-ROM contains a child and infant safety checklist, relevant anatomy and physiology, legal and ethical issues regarding CPR and AED use, frequently asked questions, heart attack and stroke, and taking care of an AED. The CD-ROM also includes video clip demonstrations of adult, child and infant CPR and choking and AED use.

  6. HEARTSAVER FIRST AID(8 - 9 hour Course)

    The Heartsaver First Aid with CPR and AED Course is intended primarily for those who are expected to provide CPR and first aid in their workplace. The Course targets all lay responders, such as firefighters, police, commercial airline crews, security personnel, employees in the workplace, family members of patients at high risk for sudden death, and other laypersons wanting to learn first aid for adults.

    The Course provides hands-on practice in the skills of first aid for adults in the workplace, including medical emergencies, injuries, environmental emergencies, CPR and choking for adults, children and infants, and the use of Automated External Defibrillators. A 130-page Heartsaver First Aid with CPR and AED Student Workbook and CD-ROM is provided to each participant for review before, during and after the Course. Two credit card-size Reminder Cards are included with the Workbook, displaying the simple steps for adult, child and infant CPR and AED use, and providing information on the recognition of heart attack and stroke.

    A First Aid Quick Reference Guide is also included with the Workbook, covering choking, bad allergic reactions, heart attack, diabetes and low blood sugar, stroke, seizures, shock, bleeding, penetrating objects, burns and electrical injuries.

    The accompanying CD-ROM contains suggested first aid kit contents, preparing for disasters, relevant anatomy and physiology, legal and ethical issues regarding CPR and AED use, frequently asked questions, heart attack and stroke, taking care of an AED, groups of poisons and a sample medical emergency response report. The CD-ROM also includes video clip demonstrations of removing gloves, finding the problem, stopping bleeding, bandaging, splinting, adult, child and infant CPR and choking and AED use.

  7. HEARTSAVER PEDIATRIC FIRST AID(8 - 9 hour Course)

    The Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid with CPR and AED Course is intended primarily for those who are expected to provide CPR and first aid for children. The Course is particularly ideal for child care workers, teachers, parents, grandparents, babysitters and volunteers who work with children.

    The Course provides hands-on practice in the skills of first aid for children, including child safety, medical emergencies, injuries, environmental emergencies, CPR and choking for adults, children and infants, and the use of Automated External Defibrillators. A 146-page Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid with CPR and AED Student Workbook and CD-ROM is provided to each participant for review before, during and after the Course. Two credit card-size Reminder Cards are included with the Workbook, displaying the simple steps for adult, child and infant CPR and AED use, and providing information on the recognition of heart attack and stroke.

    A Pediatric First Aid Quick Reference Guide is also included with the Workbook, covering choking, bad allergic reactions, diabetes and low blood sugar, seizures, shock, bleeding, penetrating objects, animal and human bites and poison emergencies.

  8. BASIC LIFE SUPPORT FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS(5 - 6 hour Course)

    The BLS for Healthcare Providers Course is intended for participants who provide health care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. These healthcare providers may include (but are not limited to) doctors, nurses, paramedics, medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, doctor's assistants, registrars, interns, medical and nursing students in training, aides, medical and nursing assistants and other allied health personnel.

    The Course is also designed for anyone who is required to take a Healthcare Provider Course for employment. The Course is a prerequisite for advanced courses in resuscitation, including Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Neonatal Life Support (ANLS), Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) and BLS Instructor Courses.

    The Course comprises 38 modules and teaches the skills of CPR and choking for victims of all ages, including ventilation with barrier devices, pocket masks, bag-valve-mask devices with supplemental oxygen, and the use of Automated External Defibrillators. An 80-page BLS for Healthcare Providers Student Manual and CD-ROM is provided to each participant for review before, during and after the Course. For successful completion of the Course, participants will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in CPR and AED use, and obtain a score of at least 85% in the final written evaluation.

    The accompanying CD-ROM contains relevant anatomy and physiology, the clinical presentation of coronary heart disease, stroke, special situations, and risk factors for heart disease and stroke. The CD-ROM also includes video clip demonstrations of adult, child and infant CPR and choking, the use of bag-valve-masks and Automated External Defibrillators.


BASIC LIFE SUPPORT INSTRUCTOR COURSE

Course Description

The Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor Course is a 2 day programme, i.e. a 1-day Core Instructor Course and a 1-day Discipline Specific Module Course, designed to prepare BLS instructors to disseminate the science, skills and philosophy of resuscitation programmes to participants enrolled in BLS & Heartsaver Courses.

The American Heart Association Core Instructor Course is video-intensive and CD directed. It provides a model of the behaviours that each module teaches. The Course is highly interactive, requiring candidates to make decisions, engage in dialogue and reflect on what constitutes quality instruction. The Course takes at least 8 hours to complete.

The Discipline Specific Module Course (DSM) is a full day learning experience facilitated by a BLS Faculty Member. The Core Instructor Course is a prerequisite for this Course, and provides many opportunities for application and practice of instruction, skills teaching and assessment in the BLS context.

Within 3 months of attending the DSM course, the instructor candidate must independently organize and present an American Heart Association Course during which he/she will be monitored by the BLS Faculty Member to audit performance, knowledge and skills.

After successful monitoring, the instructor candidate is registered with the Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa as a BLS / Heartsaver Instructor, capable of teaching American Heart Association & Resuscitation Council CPR and Basic Life Support Courses.

Mandatory Pre-Entry Requirements

  1. Instructor candidates must hold a valid AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider Certificate.
  2. Instructor candidates must be linked to a recognised Basic Life Support Training Centre.
  3. Instructor candidates must achieve at least 85% on the written examination.
  4. Instructor candidates must be monitored within 3 months of the Instructor Course.
  5. Instructor candidates must be prepared to attend a formal Update, or be remonitored, whichever is applicable, every two years.
